Science Week: Dinosaur Food Swamp

Step into a mysterious world of exploration and discoveries. Stomp your way through a forested wetland of predictions, explosions and scientific change.

Welcome to Dinosaur Food Swamp!

A dinosaur sensory experience, surrounded by three science experiments all inspired by alkali materials and gastronomic food.

Mini Volcano Experiment

You will need:

  • A plastic funnel
  • Coloured modelling clay or playdough
  • 1 cup of Bicarbonate Soda
  • 3 drops of Food Colouring
  • 2 cups Vinegar (We used a 480mL plastic sauce bottle)

Method

  1. Wrap a plastic funnel with modelling clay or playdough to create a volcano.
  2. Under the funnel add one cup of bi-carb soda.
  3. Add a few drops of food colouring through the funnel.
  4. Add vinegar through the funnel and watch the volcano erupt with bubbling, fizzy lava!

The fizzy lava bubbles that erupt are filled with carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide is a colourless, odourless gas that forms when an acid, such as vinegar, amazingly reacts with the bicarbonate soda.

Candy Swamp

You will need:

  • A plate
  • Skittles or smarties (enough to make a circle around the plate)
  • Water

Method

  1. Place the skittles in a circle around the edge of the plate.
  2. Carefully pour water in the middle of the plate.
  3. Watch the food colouring and sweet sugar from the skittles dissolve and spread through the water to create a kaleidoscopic, colourful candy swamp for the dinosaurs.

Magic Milk Swamp

You will need:

  • Milk
  • Cotton buds
  • Food colouring
  • Dishwashing detergent

Method

  1. Pour some milk into a tray or container.
  2. Add some different coloured drops of food colouring in different spots within the milk.
  3. Dip a cotton bud into a bowl of dishwashing detergent.
  4. Dip the cotton bud into the centre of each food colouring. Watch the colours stomp and swirl around the Magic Milk Swamp.
